A year after the last major release, Oracle has introduced the first beta release of the virtualization system VirtualBox 7.2. The official release is expected in the summer. Beta builds of VirtualBox 7.2 have been prepared for RHEL 8/9/10, Fedora 36/40, openSUSE 15.6, Ubuntu 20.04/22.04/24.04/24.10, Debian 11/12, macOS, and Windows. The project's code is written in C++ and is distributed under the GPLv2+ license.
Key Changes:
- In the graphical interface, global operations have been moved from the dropdown menu to the sidebar located on the left, while tools for of virtual machines have been moved to separate tabs displayed above the area with the right panel.
- Support for virtualization on host systems with Windows using ARM architecture processors has been added.
- Support for running guest systems with Windows 11 for ARM architecture has been added. A new OS type 'Windows 11/Arm' has been implemented in the guest additions.
- Compatibility with the state of virtual machines on ARM architecture saved in VirtualBox 7.1, as well as saved snapshots of ARM VMs, has been broken. Before switching to the VirtualBox 7.2 branch, it is necessary to finish these virtual machines.
- The web service vboxwebsrv for management through the web interface has been included in the components for host systems based on ARM architecture.
- In virtual machines Support for ACPI has been implemented for ARM architecture.
- libIDL and IASL have been removed from the dependencies.
