Kris Moore, the creator of the PC-BSD project and vice president of iXsystems, on the start of testing installation builds and , in which the originally supported FreeBSD implementation of the ZFS file system has been replaced with developments from the project "". Thanks to the initiative to ensure code portability of "ZFS on Linux" to other systems, ports sysutils/zol (utilities) and sysutils/zol-kmod (kernel module) are now being offered for testing. In the context of the file system, the simplest way to test is to provide ready-made installation images where the original ZFS implementation is disabled and ports with "ZFS on Linux" are pre-installed. UFS and ZFS can be used as the file system for the root partition. It should be recalled that in December last year, FreeBSD developers presented
" (ZoL), around which all recent activity related to the development of ZFS has been concentrated. The reason for the migration mentioned the stagnation of the ZFS code base from the Illumos project (a fork of OpenSolaris), which was previously used as the basis for transferring ZFS-related changes to FreeBSD. Until recently, the support of the ZFS code base in Illumos was handled by Delphix, the company developing the operating system to switch to the implementation of ZFS from the “(a fork of Illumos). A year ago, Delphix decided to switch to "ZFS on Linux", which led to the stagnation of ZFS from the Illumos project and the transfer of all related development activity to the "ZFS on Linux" project, which is now viewed as the primary implementation. FreeBSD developers decided to follow the general example and not try to cling to Illumos, as this implementation is already significantly lagging in functionality and requires substantial resources for code maintenance and changes transfer. "ZFS on Linux" is now regarded as the primary collaborative project for ZFS development. Support for FreeBSD will be integrated directly into the code of "ZFS on Linux" and will evolve primarily in the main repository of this project. .
Some features available in the "ZFS on Linux" port for FreeBSD that are absent in the ZFS implementation from Illumos include:
Multihost mode (
- Multi Modifier Protection);;
- Extended quota system;
- Dataset encryption;
- Separate selection of block allocation classes;
- Раздельный выбор классов распределения блоков (allocation classes);
- Using vector processor instructions to accelerate the implementation of RAIDZ and checksum calculations;
- Enhanced command-line tools;
- Fixing many bugs related to race conditions and deadlocks.
