The next generation of Intel desktop processors will be the Rocket Lake-S family. There have been earlier rumors about the unusual nature of these chips—they will be a 14nm adaptation of the Willow Cove cores designed for a 10nm process. However, more bizarre information has emerged suggesting that the new generation will allegedly feature processors with eight computing cores and twelve threads. And no, we are not mistaken; this is indeed regarding the 'core formula' of 8/12.
This information was shared by the VideoCardz resource, which obtained a snapshot of an internal Intel document describing the positioning of the Rocket Lake-S series chips from 'a reliable source.' Among the quite typical Core i5 processors with six cores and twelve threads, as well as Core i9 processors with eight cores and sixteen threads, there were also unusual Core i7 models, where the number of threads exceeds the number of cores, not by two times, but only by one and a half.
It's difficult to say what is behind this peculiar feature at this stage. It’s possible that a mistake simply crept into the document. On the other hand, in the current generation of Comet Lake-S processors, Intel has already implemented the ability to disable Hyper-Threading technology for each individual core. Therefore, from a technical standpoint, an Intel processor with 8 cores and 12 threads is quite feasible.
It is worth mentioning that in the Coffee Lake Refresh generation, both the Core i9 and Core i7 processors also had 8 cores, but in the Core i7 series, the Hyper-Threading technology was completely disabled. However, for future Rocket Lake-S processors, such a differentiation option is not suitable due to the strengthening of the Core i5 series, where Hyper-Threading technology will be supported. This is why the appearance of 12-thread and 8-core processors in the Core i7 series does not seem too surprising.
Another interesting part of this leak is that in the lower price segment, updated Comet Lake-S processors, also known as Comet Lake-S Refresh, will be offered instead of Rocket Lake-S. Apparently, Intel will simply raise the clock frequencies of the existing chips and include them in the new generation. Furthermore, this indirectly indicates that Rocket Lake-S will indeed differ significantly from the current Intel processors architecturally, which is promising after five years of the Skylake microarchitecture.
