This week, as reported by The Stack, the first hearing at the High Court of the United Kingdom took place regarding the lawsuit from IBM UK, which accused the Swiss company LzLabs of using its British subsidiary Winsopia to purchase IBM software for mainframes for the purpose of reverse engineering and developing the Software Defined Mainframe (SDM) platform. According to IBM, the SDM platform, essentially an emulator, allows clients to use IBM mainframe applications on x86 servers running Linux, including cloud environments, without the need to modify the source code or rebuild it. IBM claims in the lawsuit that LzLabs violated the terms of the licensing agreement, which prohibits reverse engineering of software products. The lawsuit was filed in the High Court back in September 2021 and has since undergone several amendments. IBM demands compensation for damages, recognition of the illegal methods of developing SDM, and a prohibition on the sale of SDM.
