Netmarketshare has published a report following its latest research, which determined the market share of popular operating systems and browsers as of April 2020. The data indicates that the share of Windows 10 has declined, while the Edge browser continues to gain popularity.
The report states that in April, the global market share of Windows 10 was 56.08%, compared to when it was 57.34%. This decrease is not related to a resurgence in popularity of Windows 7, as the presence of that operating system has also declined: from 26.3% in March to 25.59% in April.
At the same time, the growing popularity of Linux is noted (market share increased from 1.36% to 2.87%) and macOS 10.x, which rose from 8.94% in March to 9.75% in April. The Windows 8.1 operating system is running on 3.28% of devices, while Windows 7 is used by 25.59% of users.
As for the market share of browsers, this segment remains relatively stable. During the reporting period, the market share of Google Chrome rose to 69.18%, while in March it was 68.5%. A slight increase in Microsoft Edge's share is worth noting: from 7.59% in March to 7.76% in April. Mozilla Firefox gained even less, with a market share of 7.25% during the reporting period.
It's worth mentioning that the new Microsoft Edge, built on Chromium, continues to gradually become more popular. The Chrome browser is also making strides and is currently just a step away from a record 70% market share.
