Nearly a month and a half after its premiere, the developers at 4A Games released the first major patch for Metro Exodus — the Ranger Update. This update brings a host of new features, including a 'New Game +' mode with developer commentary that can be listened to during gameplay, as well as improvements in performance and the functionality of NVIDIA RTX real-time ray tracing technology. The update is 6 GB and is now available on all platforms.

Starting Metro Exodus in 'New Game +' mode after completing the campaign allows the player (if they wish) to receive all weapons and modifications they unlocked during past playthroughs (all of this will appear at the 'Aurora' workbench after rescuing Anna in Moscow). This does not apply to suit and wrist device upgrades.
The new mode includes various settings to add variety to replaying the game. For example, players can choose not to carry over all found weapons, leaving only one slot and carrying no more than one 'gun' (though they are allowed to switch it out). There's also an option to disable crafting with the backpack (in which case it will only be available at workbenches) and use the backpack solely for weapon modifications. At the beginning of the game, in addition to other weapons, players can now obtain a crossbow. Enemies can be enhanced — when the corresponding options are enabled, human enemy armor levels increase by one (if possible), and mutants become less susceptible to damage. The 'Grenadiers' setting makes opponents use grenades more frequently in combat.
The in-game day can be extended to a full twenty-four hours (instead of the standard two), and the weather can worsen (fog, rain, snow, and sandstorms will occur more frequently). Additionally, there is now the option to add extra radiation zones to some levels, making the gas mask a more important piece of equipment. Another new feature, 'Iron Mode,' completely disables the ability to save the game (progress is only recorded between levels). Furthermore, in 'New Game +,' fresh achievements and trophies can be unlocked.
Finally, in this mode, developers' commentary is available. The authors' stories about the creation of certain locations and other features are presented in the form of tape recordings. To listen to them, you need to find those tape recorders.

Other changes and new features:
- Improved control responsiveness. Developers added a fourth set of controller sensitivity settings with even finer parameters, enhanced the auto-targeting system, and adjusted the 'dead zone' for each platform;
- Optimizations, performance, and gameplay balance have been improved. The creators made numerous changes based on gamer feedback regarding bugs. Among other things, they fulfilled the request to add a separate volume control for duplicated voiceovers;
- Support for keyboard and mouse on Xbox One has been added;
- Support for RTX and DLSS has been improved;
- Support for the DualShock Light controller for PlayStation 4, as well as DualShock and Steam Controller for PC, has been added;
- Full Ukrainian localization has been added.
In addition, the developers fixed many bugs, some of which led to crashes. User feedback also helped them with this. The authors note that the patch 'significantly improves stability' overall, but they warn that changes related to specific levels will only take effect after the level is restarted (this can be done through the chapter selection menu).
All details of the Ranger Update for PC can be found here, and for consoles — here. The developers thanked players for their patience and help in identifying issues, and also reported that they are already working on the next patches.
Metro Exodus was released on February 15 for PC (Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
