The first release of the new main branch nginx 1.29.0 has been published, continuing the development of new features. The parallel stable branch 1.28.x will only receive changes related to the correction of serious bugs and vulnerabilities. Next year, a stable branch 1.30 will be formed based on the main branch 1.29.x. The project's code is written in C and distributed under the BSD license.
In the new release:
- The "early_hints" directive has been added, with support for HTTP status code 103 in responses from proxy backends and gRPC. Code 103 allows informing the client about the content of certain HTTP headers immediately after the request, without waiting for server it to complete all operations related to the request and start delivering content. In this way, hints about related elements on the page being delivered can be communicated, which can be preloaded (for example, links to the CSS and JavaScript used on the page). Once the browser receives information about such resources, it will begin loading them without waiting for the main page delivery to finish, which helps reduce the overall request handling time.
- Support has been provided for loading cryptographic keys from hardware tokens, using the OpenSSL library as the provider.
- Support for the "so_keepalive" parameter has been implemented in the "listen" directive on the macOS platform.
- The error level occurring during connection negotiation using the QUIC protocol has been changed from "error" to "crit" for critical problems with SSL and to "info" for other issues with SSL.
- Windows SDK 10 has been used for building the Windows version.
- Issues with building the ngx_http_v2_module and ngx_http_v3_module modules using GCC 15 have been resolved, as well as problems with building the ngx_http_v3_module with optimizations "-O3 -flto" in GCC 14.
- Support for HTTP/3 has been improved.
