The Raspberry Pi project has introduced a new version of the Raspberry Pi OS distribution, dated 2026-04-13 (Raspbian). This distribution is based on Debian 13 and contains approximately 35,000 packages in its repository. The desktop environment is built on the labwc composite server, utilizing the wlroots library from the Sway project. Three builds are available for download: a slim version (537MB) for server systems, one with a basic desktop (1.2GB), and a full version with an additional set of applications (1.9GB). Builds are available for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. An update for the older Raspberry Pi OS (Legacy), based on Debian 12, has also been prepared.
Key changes:
- By default, the sudo utility's passwordless execution mode is disabled — any permitted operations through sudo now require the current user's password to be entered. After successfully entering the password, sudo will not require re-confirmation of actions for 5 minutes.
- Performing privileged operations in the Control Centre configurator also now requires the current user's password for confirmation.
- Options have been added to the Control Centre configurator in the system settings section and in the raspi-config utility to restore the old behavior.
- A tab for editing the main menu has been added to the Control Centre configurator. The separate menu editor, alacarte, is no longer supplied.
- The gtk-launch utility is used to launch applications from the main menu.
- Shutdown operations and manual program launches are implemented in the menu through external handler applications instead of using built-in functionality.
- New plugins for the panel have been implemented, featuring a task list and launcher.
- By default, the Chromium browser package includes the uBlock Origin Lite and h264ify extensions. The package libpam-gnome-keyring has been added to the system to use the system password when unlocking access to the built-in password manager in Chromium.
- Instead of automatically starting the printer discovery service (cups-browsed), it is now manually started and stopped through the Control Centre configurator.
- An option has been added to the configurator to display the home directory on the desktop instead of the documents folder.
- Sound output has been excluded from the default supply. server Pulseaudio support has also been removed from the raspi-config utility. The initial setup master has been enhanced with features for managing multimedia. proxy server Pipewire.
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.12.75.
