According to available data, the new code suggests more operations with metadata and includes fixes for several bugs. So far, it is only used on Android devices manufactured by Samsung.
Last weekend, the 11th version of the Samsung exFAT driver was released. However, this is not the only option for future kernels. Another alternative is the previously commercial driver from Paragon Software.
The first open version of this driver was released last October and was licensed by Microsoft. Although the aforementioned version from Samsung appeared in the Linux kernel back in August.
It should be noted that exFAT was developed by Microsoft to bypass the FAT32 limitations when used on high-capacity flash drives. This includes, for example, the maximum file size, fragmentation, and other data. exFAT support was first implemented in Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1.
