Microsoft is diligently preparing the new Edge browser based on Chromium for release. Currently, the primary focus is on the Canary and Dev builds, with no information about release dates. However, researcher Rafael Rivera reported that code indicating the company's plans for Edge was discovered in the latest Windows 10 build for Fast Ring insiders. Specifically, the new browser may in the 20H1 update next spring.
Preliminary builds of Windows 10 20H1 are currently being tested by Windows insiders in the Fast ring. The latest preliminary build, 18936, was released this week. Rivera's findings suggest that the company has settled on a timeline and plans to release the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge in April or May 2020. Of course, the dates are approximate, as the company may delay the release, as seen with version 1903.
At the moment, the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is available on macOS and on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 via the Dev and Canary update channels. There are currently no details regarding the release of beta builds, but it can be assumed they will come out this year.
It is not yet reported whether the official version of the new Microsoft Edge will be released for Linux operating systems, but it would be a good step for the future, considering that there is significant interest in open source in Redmond.
