After eight months of development, version 0.38 of the console utility has been released. nwipe, designed for securely erasing the contents of disks using various methods of wiping and pseudorandom number generators. It can wipe a single disk as well as multiple disks simultaneously.
The utility is written in C using the ncurses library for the text interface and is distributed under the GNU GPL 2.0 license.
Change log:
- A compilation error has been fixed in some distributions, relevant only for i686.
- A feature has been added, relevant only for ShredOS: the key f switches the font size from standard to double in other distributions with X.Org and Wayland it does not take effect. Pressing the key f is processed only in the disk selection and progress screens.
- Fixed errors when querying hidden sectors for SAS disks.
- In some distributions, nwipe could not find hdparm or smartctl even if they were installed. Their search has been added to /usr/sbin/.
- Model name detection for Hitachi, Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate/ST USB drives has been corrected. This issue often occurred with some older adapters and drive interfaces.
- Key press handling has been corrected. S.
For SSD disks, it is recommended to always use nwipe / ShredOS in conjunction with the manufacturer's or supplier's own data destruction tools to ensure complete destruction of the information contained on the disk. For more details, see the relevant guide (in English).
