The release of the graphics editor GIMP 3.0.6 has been announced. Ready builds are published for Linux (AppImage and Flatpak for x86 and ARM64 architectures), macOS, and Windows. The main focus in preparing the new version was on fixing bugs and regressions. New functionality is being developed in the GIMP 3.1 branch, based on which a stable release GIMP 3.2 will be formed, featuring link layers and vector layers, as well as expanded support for the CMYK color model and color management capabilities.
Among the changes in GIMP 3.0.6:
- Backported from the GIMP 3.1.2 release is the support for rendering thumbnails of brushes, fonts, and palettes using the foreground and background colors of the active theme. For example, when selecting a dark theme, brushes can now be displayed in light colors on a dark background, rather than just on a white background.
- Changes to the code from the under-development branch have been transferred to apply filters in a non-destructive mode, improving the stability and performance of filters and enabling the application of non-destructive filters to channels, as well as synchronizing the code state to simplify bug fixing in stable and experimental branches.
- The palette import dialog has been updated, now featuring filtering options for various palette formats, including Adobe ASE, CSS, and GPL. Issues importing palettes in ACB (Adobe Color Book) format have been resolved.
- The issue of the missing tab for configuring parameters of the printed image when launching GIMP in an isolated environment, such as when using flatpak and snap packages, has been resolved.
- Usability of the control sliders has been improved — after transitioning to GTK3, hovering over them caused some users to see a hand cursor instead of an arrow, making it difficult to select the precise position.
- Crashes on the Windows platform have been fixed, which occurred when opening or exporting files in certain non-English configurations due to an error in Windows UCRT.
- The issue leading to crashes when changing the text outline color in the text tool has been resolved.
- Improved handling of transparency in filters and transformations when importing images in formats that do not support transparency, such as JPEG. For example, transparency was not added when rotating layers.
- Enhanced support for the macOS platform.
- Updated versions of the GEGL 0.4.64 and babl 0.1.116 libraries.
- Fixed 6 vulnerabilities leading to buffer overflow or integer overflow when parsing images in ILBM, FF, WBMP, DCM, and ICNS formats. These vulnerabilities could potentially be exploited to execute code when opening specially crafted files in GIMP.
