The release of the MenuetOS 1.50 operating system has been published, developed entirely in assembly language. MenuetOS builds are prepared for 64-bit x86 systems and can be run under QEMU. The system build takes up 1.4 MB and is available as a floppy disk image and an ISO image for burning to CD (launching in VirtualBox is supported). The source code of the project is distributed under a modified MIT license, supplemented by a requirement for agreement on any commercial use.
The system supports preemptive multitasking, booting on systems with UEFI, and SMP on multi-core systems. The project is also developing its own X server and provides a built-in graphical user interface with support for themes, Drag&Drop operations, UTF-8 encoding, and keyboard layout switching.
An integrated development environment is offered for application development in assembly. There is a network stack and drivers for Loopback and Ethernet interfaces. USB 2.0 is supported, including for USB drives, printers, DVB tuners, and web cameras. For audio output, AC97 and Intel HDA (ALC662/888) are supported.
The project is developing a simple web browser HTTPC, as well as email and FTP clients, and a VNC client. servers ftp and http, applications for viewing images, editing text, file management, video playback, and music playback. For file navigation, it's recommended to use the NDN (Necromancer's Dos Navigator) file manager, ported for MenuetOS.
A DOS emulator can be launched, along with games such as Quake and Doom. A multimedia player is being developed separately, written entirely in assembly and not using external codec libraries. The player supports TV/Radio streaming (DVB-T, MPEG-2 video, MPEG-1 layer I, II, III audio), DVD playback, MP3 playback, and video in MPEG-2 format.
