New builds of FreedomBox Trixie have been released, translated to the Debian 13 package base. The project develops a system for the easy deployment of personal servers that protect users' personal data and allow the quick launch of typical services on their own hardware for personal use. All project developments are available through Debian repositories. The installation image is created for the x86_64 architecture (i386 builds are no longer being produced). If desired, users can create their own image using the special installer Freedom-Maker and the freedombox-setup configurator.
After booting from the created boot media, users can install pre-configured components ready for use via the web interface, such as VPN for access to their local network, the home automation platform Home Assistant, the mail server Postfix with the webmail Roundcube, the file-sharing system Bepasty, the TURN server Coturn, BitTorrent web clients Deluge and Transmission, the Jabber server Ejabberd, the Git interface Gitweb, gateways for working through I2P and Tor, video chat Janus, voice chat Mumble, the Matrix server Synapse, cloud storage and collaboration system Nextcloud, the streaming server MiniDLNA, backup storage Borg, filtering proxy Privoxy, file server based on Samba, the scheduling calendar Radicale, photo manager Zoph, various Wiki engines, and a WordPress-based site. The project can also be used as a home router, firewall, and proxy for filtering ads and trackers.
FreedomBox was founded by Eben Moglen, a professor of law at Columbia University, who provides legal support to the Free Software Foundation. The project was created to provide tools for building inexpensive personal servers low-power servers that users can use to store their personal data and ensure secure communications without resorting to external centralized services.
In collaboration with Olimex, the FreedomBox Foundation supplies FreedomBox Pioneer mini-servers with the pre-installed FreedomBox platform. The device is certified by the SSHWA association as Open Source Hardware and is notable for its built-in battery, which provides temporary autonomous operation in case of stationary power failures.
