Proton 4.11-8 update, a package for running Windows games on Linux

Valve Corporation released new release of the project Proton 4.11-8, which is based on the developments of the Wine project and aims to enable the launch of gaming applications created for Windows on Linux, available in the Steam catalog. The project's developments is distributed under the BSD license.

Proton allows you to run gaming applications provided only for Windows directly in the Linux client Steam. The package includes an implementation of DirectX 9 (based on D9VK), DirectX 10/11 (based on DXVK) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d), which operates through translating DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, provides enhanced support for game controllers, and allows full-screen mode usage regardless of supported screen resolutions in games.

In new version:

  • finalrd integrated the package vkd3d, providing an implementation of Direct3D 12 that works through call translation in the Vulkan API;
  • The supply of Wine build variants and other libraries with included debug symbols has been discontinued. For debugging purposes, a separate 'debug' branch of Proton is available in the Steam client;
  • The build system has been updated. A new build target has been added to the makefile
    ‘redist’, simplifying the redistribution of Proton builds among users. The build process has been significantly accelerated. The virtual machine image used for building has been updated to Debian 10;
  • Work has been done to reduce the disk space consumption of the Proton package and decrease the size of downloaded updates;
  • Improvements have been made related to the Rockstar Launcher and Grand Theft Auto 5;
  • Game controller support has been enhanced in Farming Simulator 19 and Resident Evil 2;
  • Issues with the mouse in Arma 3 have been resolved;
  • The ability to launch the game 'DmC: Devil May Cry' has been ensured;
  • The DXVK layer (implementation of DXGI, Direct3D 10, and Direct3D 11 on top of the Vulkan API) has been updated to branch 1.4.4;
  • The D9VK layer (implementation of Direct3D 9 on top of the Vulkan API) has been updated to an experimental version 0.30;
  • FAudio components with implementations of DirectX sound libraries (API XAudio2, X3DAudio, XAPO, and XACT3) have been updated to the release 19.11;
  • The wine-mono components, which allow many XNA games and Unreal Engine 3 games to run, have been updated to version 4.9.4.
