New boot images of the Void Linux distribution have been created. This is an independent project that does not use developments from other distributions and is developed using a continuous version update cycle (rolling updates, without separate distribution releases). The last builds were published a year ago. Besides the availability of current boot images based on a more recent snapshot of the system, there are no functional changes in the builds, and their use makes sense only for new installations (in already installed systems, package updates are delivered as they become available).
The builds are available in versions based on the Glibc and Musl system libraries. Live images with the Xfce desktop and a basic console build have been prepared for the x86_64, i686, armv6l, armv7l, and aarch64 platforms. The ARM builds support BeagleBone/BeagleBone Black, Cubieboard 2, Odroid U2/U3, RaspberryPi (ARMv6), and Raspberry Pi boards. Unlike previous releases, the new builds for Raspberry Pi are now consolidated into universal images for Raspberry Pi boards based on armv6l (1 A, 1 B, 1 A+, 1 B+, Zero, Zero W, Zero WH), armv7l (2 B), and aarch64 (3 B, 3 A+, 3 B+, Zero 2W, 4 B, 400).
The distribution uses the runit system manager for initialization and service management. It develops its own package manager called xbps and a package build system named xbps-src. Xbps allows you to install, remove, and update applications, detect shared library incompatibilities, and manage dependencies. Instead of Glibc, Musl can be used as the standard library. The systems developed in Void are distributed under the BSD license.
