The new release of the VeraCrypt project 1.24-Update7, which is a fork of the disk encryption system TrueCrypt that has been discontinued. VeraCrypt is notable for replacing the RIPEMD-160 algorithm used in TrueCrypt with SHA-512 and SHA-256, increasing the number of hashing iterations, simplifying the build process for Linux and macOS, and fixing issues identified during the audit of TrueCrypt's source code. In addition, VeraCrypt provides compatibility mode with TrueCrypt partitions and includes tools for converting TrueCrypt partitions to the VeraCrypt format. The code developed by the VeraCrypt project is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license, while borrowings from TrueCrypt continue to be distributed under the TrueCrypt License 3.0.
The new version offers about 30 changes, including:
- Protection against using the same password, PIM, and key files for hidden and outer (Outer) partitions has been added.
- The JitterEntropy random number generator now includes FIPS mode.
- On Linux and macOS, it is allowed to choose a filesystem different from FAT for external partitions.
- Support for the Btrfs filesystem has been added when creating partitions.
- In static builds, the wxWidgets framework has been updated to version 3.0.5.
- A separate cleanup of critical memory areas is implemented before use, without relying on the Memory::Erase call, which may be influenced by optimization modes.
- A large number of Windows-specific fixes have been added, such as compatibility with Windows 10 Modern Standby and Windows 8.1 Connected Standby, utilizing the built-in partition formatting utility, and added support for sleep mode and fast boot mode.
