The release of OBS Studio 33.0 has been published, a package for streaming, compositing, and video recording. The code is written in C/C++ and is distributed under the GPLv2 license. Builds have been formed for Linux (flatpak), Windows, and macOS.
The goal of developing OBS Studio was to create a portable version of the Open Broadcaster Software (OBS Classic) that is not tied to the Windows platform, supporting OpenGL and extensible through plugins. It also features a modular architecture that separates the interface from the core of the application. It supports re-encoding of source streams, video capture during gaming, and streaming to PeerTube, Twitch, Facebook Gaming, YouTube, DailyMotion, and other services. To ensure high performance, hardware acceleration mechanisms can be utilized (for example, NVENC, Intel QSV, Apple Video Toolbox, and VAAPI).
Compositing support is provided based on arbitrary video streams, webcam data, video capture cards, images, text, application window content, or the entire screen. During broadcasting, switching between multiple predefined scene options is allowed (for example, to toggle views focusing on screen content and the webcam image). The program also provides tools for audio mixing, filtering using VST plugins, leveling volumes, and noise suppression.
Key changes:
- Broadcast sources based on the browser (Browser Source) and the panel with web content have been updated to the new release of the CEF 150 (Chromium Embedded Framework) toolkit. Previously, CEF 127, released in July 2024, was used.
- The plugin loading has been completely revamped. Official plugins are now located in a separate subdirectory called 'Core', while unofficial ones continue to load from old locations.
- Improved content source alignment (snapping) in the preview window. A new visual indicator has been added to show the boundary by which the element is aligned. Sources can now snap along axes, not just when coming close to objects (video demonstration included). Alignment to hidden elements has been removed.
- Input fields for numbers have been enhanced, where input is no longer blocked in certain situations, and numbers are not truncated. Values now update only upon pressing Enter, which does not close the window. Support for changing values with 'Shift + ↑/↓' has been added. Cursor functionality during dragging has been improved.
- On ARM64 systems, support for hardware-accelerated video encoding using NVENC (NVIDIA Encoder) has been enabled.
- For sound and video effects, a new version of the NVIDIA Broadcast SDK has been implemented.
- The launch of the WebSocket Server in Safe Mode has been discontinued.
- In game capture mode, the detection of fullscreen games has been improved.
- Transparency detection when capturing the screen on macOS has been enhanced.
- Support for Ubuntu 24.04 has been discontinued.
