iXsystems on the unification of its products for rapid deployment of network-attached storage (NAS). The open distribution will be combined with the commercial project , enhancing FreeNAS capabilities for enterprises and pre-installed on storage systems produced by iXsystems.
For historical reasons, FreeNAS and TrueNAS were developed, tested, and released separately, despite a large amount of common code. Significant work was needed to unify the build systems for the distribution and packages. In version , TrueNAS code has achieved parity with FreeNAS in plugin and virtual environment support, and the volume of shared code exceeded 95%, allowing work to proceed on the final merger of the projects.
In version 12.0, expected in the second half of the year, FreeNAS and TrueNAS will be merged and presented under the unified name "TrueNAS Open Storage." Users will be offered two editions: TrueNAS CORE and TrueNAS Enterprise. The first will be similar to FreeNAS and will be provided for free, while the second will focus on delivering additional capabilities for enterprises.
The merger will accelerate development and reduce the release preparation cycle by up to 6 months, enhance quality control, synchronize development with FreeBSD for more timely support of new hardware, simplify documentation, unify websites, streamline migration between commercial and free editions of the distribution, and expedite the transition to
based on "ZFS on Linux."
FreeNAS is based on the FreeBSD codebase, featuring integrated ZFS support and management through a web interface built using the Python Django framework. For accessing storage, it supports FTP, NFS, Samba, AFP, rsync, and iSCSI, and software RAID (0,1,5) can be used to enhance storage reliability, while LDAP/Active Directory is implemented for client authorization.
