Cloudflare analyzed the adoption of the IPv6 protocol in the global network, using data from traffic on its services as a source. In the content delivery network traffic, the number of users supporting IPv6 is estimated at 35.9% (the share of IPv6 support among bots is 24%, and among humans — 46%). In comparison, according to the internet registrar APNIC, the global adoption of IPv6 is estimated at 36.64%. The leaders in IPv6 adoption are India (81.53%), Malaysia (69.48%), France (66.67%), Belgium (66.02%), and Germany (64.91%). In Russia, the level of IPv6 support is 10.84%, in Ukraine — 11.76%, in Belarus — 13.59%, in Kazakhstan — 14.61%, in Uzbekistan — 0.15%, and in Kyrgyzstan — 0.05%.
The above data only covers IPv6 support on the client side, so to understand how ready servers are to handle requests via IPv6, an additional analysis of the traffic from the DNS service 1.1.1.1 (2606:4700:4700::1111) was conducted. The level of IPv6 support among Cloudflare's DNS service users was 30.5%, while among servers — 43.3% when counting the number of DNS requests and responses with 'A' (IPv4) and 'AAAA' (IPv6) records. When combining data on requests and responses, it was found that only 13.2% of the time connections to the server can be established via IPv6 instead of IPv4, indicating simultaneous support for IPv6 support on both the client side and the requested server side.
Many popular websites are still inaccessible via IPv6. For example, an analysis of the responses from DNS servers serving the 100 most popular domains (Top100), which account for 55% of all requests for 'A' and 'AAAA' records, revealed that in 39.2% of cases, only IPv4 addresses are returned for requests. Thus, the level of IPv6 support for the Top100 list is 60.8%, which is noticeably higher than the overall figure of 43.3%. If we apply the previously proposed comparison of client and server capabilities without considering the domains from the Top100 list, the possibility of establishing a connection via IPv6 decreases from 13.2% to 8%.
