Developers of eight Linux distributions specializing in providing environments for running computer games, have formed a working group Open Gaming Collective (OGC) to collaboratively develop a unified set of components and promote prepared changes to the core of the projects that make up the open game stack. The initiative has been joined by the distributions Universal Blue (Bazzite), Nobara, ChimeraOS, Playtron, Fyra Labs, PikaOS, ShadowBlip and ASUS Linux.
It is expected that collaborative work on overlapping tasks across different distributions will free up time and focus attention on the development of features specific to each distribution. When creating patches for existing packages, participants will strive to have the prepared changes accepted into the upstream projects whenever possible, instead of maintaining separate sets of patches tied to the packages shipped in the distributions.
Currently, OGC has launched two projects — a package with the Linux kernel OGC Kernel, focused on optimizing performance and efficiency during gaming applications, and a fork of the composite server developed by Valve, Gamescope, which includes support for additional hardware. OGC also plans to jointly develop the background process InputPlumber for handling events from various input devices and patches for various packages from Valve used in SteamOS.
Distribution Bazzite, based on technologies Fedora Silverblue and optimized for running games, has decided to switch to using the OGC Kernel, replace HHD (HandHeld Daemon) with InputPlumber, integrate RGB lighting and cooler control into Steam UI, and begin testing the use of Faugus Launcher as a potential replacement for the platform Lutris.
