The OpenELA Association of manufacturers of RedHat-like enterprise distributions, including CtrlIQ (Rocky Linux), Oracle Linux, and SUSE, has announced the launch of a new project, Kernel-LTS, aimed at extending support for LTS kernels. The first kernel to receive long-term support will be version 4.14.
In January, the main development team ceased support for kernel 4.14, which was released in November 2017 and had support for 6 years. Support for the kernel will now be extended at least until the end of 2024.
There will be no restrictions, such as binding to specific hardware or products. Thus, the lifecycle of the 32-bit architecture can also be significantly extended at the discretion of the developers of independent distributions, even in the event of changes in the main Linux development branch.
