OpenIndiana — an operating system based on OpenSolaris. It is part of the Illumos Foundation and provides a true open-source alternative for the community to Solaris 11 and Solaris 11 Express, including an open development model and full community participation.
The latest release of the project, OpenIndiana Hipster 2019.10, ported some tools from Python 2 to version 3 along with several package updates.
According to the developers, during this development cycle, work was done on updating IPS, porting the remaining OpenIndiana applications to Python 3, and rewriting some closed binary objects in DDU.
The operating system includes the following desktop software and libraries:
- VirtualBox has been updated to 6.0.14.
- Fonts, tools, and libraries of Xorg have been updated.
- FreeType has been updated to 2.10.1.
- GTK 3 has been updated to 3.24.12.
- LightDM has been updated to 1.30.
- Packages x265 and mpack have been added, x264’s version has been updated, and a good Powerline status line integrated with Bash, tmux, and Vim has been added.
- An additional x11-init service has been added to create the necessary directories with root permissions for X11 applications.
