Amazon has announced the creation of the OpenSearch Software Foundation, managed by the Linux Foundation, which will oversee the continued development of the OpenSearch project, a fork of the Elasticsearch search, analytics, and data storage platform, as well as the Kibana web interface. It is noted that moving OpenSearch to an independent neutral platform, not controlled by individual companies, will attract new contributors and make the project more appealing for implementation.
Project management will be carried out by a technical committee formed by representatives from the community and companies participating in the development. The main principle of the governance model is defined as 'community-driven development for the community.' Companies such as Amazon, SAP, Uber, Aiven, Aryn, Atlassian, Canonical, DigitalOcean, Eliatra, Graylog, NetAp Instaclustr, and Portal26 have expressed their intention to join the work on OpenSearch within the new organization. The community formed around OpenSearch includes several thousand members, with over 200 maintainers from 25 companies and organizations. Since the creation of the fork, the project has seen more than 700 million downloads.
The fork was created in response to the transition of the Elasticsearch project to a non-free SSPL (Server Side Public License) license and the cessation of publishing changes under the old Apache 2.0 license. Despite Elasticsearch's recent return to using a free license, the OpenSearch project remains relevant, as it continues to use the permissive Apache 2.0 license instead of the AGPLv3 license adopted by Elasticsearch, and it is developing a number of specific extensions that were previously offered by Amazon in a separate distribution, Open Distro for Elasticsearch, which replace the paid components of Elasticsearch.
