BlackBerry QNX has made it possible to use the microkernel real-time operating system QNX for free for non-commercial purposes. It has also announced the beginning of the formation of QNX 8.0 system images for Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 boards. Commenting on the return of the QNX project to publishing source code, the manager responsible for developer relations noted that the company is moving towards greater openness and transparency, but he could not provide any timeline for such changes.
In 2007, an initiative was launched to open the source code of QNX under a license allowing modifications. The QNX Neutrino microkernel code, file systems, system libraries, drivers, microGUI, network stack, and accompanying utilities were published as open access. In 2010, QNX Software Systems was acquired by Research In Motion (RIM), which owns the BlackBerry brand, and thereafter, code publication was halted. Currently, QNX's open initiatives are limited to a GitLab repository that collects ports of open applications for QNX, frameworks, components for the QNX Hypervisor, and application examples.
