The results of a survey of open source developers conducted by Intel are now available. When asked about the main problems of open source software, 45% of participants noted burnout of maintainers, 41% highlighted issues with quality and availability of documentation, 37% pointed out the need for sustainable development, 32% indicated the organization of community interaction, 31% mentioned insufficient funding, 30% noted the accumulation of technical debt (participants not completing their work), and 27% highlighted quality control.
When asked about the most significant aspect of open source software, 46% identified code licenses, 17% mentioned the friendly nature of the community, 14% highlighted the responsiveness of maintainers, and 11% noted development activity.
In selecting the most interesting open projects, 80% mentioned the Linux kernel, 42% highlighted the Rust language, 38% noted LLVM/Clang, 35% mentioned GCC, 24% highlighted Kubernetes, 17% mentioned PyTorch, and 15% pointed to eBPF.
82% emphasized the critical importance of developing artificial intelligence technologies in the form of open projects.
30% of respondents participate in the development of open projects more than once a week, 21% several times a month, and 20% several times a year.
