A graphics editor Pinta 1.7 has been released, serving as an alternative to Paint.NET.

Five years after the last release is formed release of the open raster graphics editor Pinta 1.7, which represents an attempt to rewrite the Paint.NET program using GTK. The editor provides a basic set of tools for drawing and image processing, aimed at novice users. The interface is simplified, the editor supports an unlimited undo buffer, allows working with multiple layers, and comes with a set of tools for applying various effects and editing images. Pinta's code is distributed is licensed under the MIT license. The project is written in C# using Mono and Gtk# bindings. Binary builds are prepared for Ubuntu, macOS, and Windows.

In the new release:

• Added the ability to edit multiple images in different tabs. The content of the tabs can be pinned next to each other or detached into separate windows.
• The Rotate / Zoom dialog has added support for scaling and panning.
• A smooth eraser tool has been added, which can be activated through the Type menu on the eraser panel.
• The Pencil tool now includes the ability to switch between different blending modes.
• Support for JASC PaintShop Pro palette files has been added.
• In the transformation tool, rotation by a fixed amount can be achieved by holding the Shift key while rotating.
• The selection movement tool now supports scaling when holding the Ctrl key.
• Added support for moving URLs from the browser via drag & drop for uploading and opening the specified image in the link.
• Performance has been improved when selecting areas in large images.
• In the rectangular selection tool, different cursor arrow icons are shown in the various corners.
• An AppData file has been added for integration with certain application directories on Linux.
• Added the user manual.
• The interface of the new image creation dialog has been improved.
• In the Rotate / Zoom dialog, in-place rotation is provided without resizing the layer.
• Blending operations from the Cairo library have been applied instead of PDN.
• At least .NET 4.5 / Mono 4.0 is now required for operation. For Linux and macOS, it is highly recommended to use Mono 6.x.
