Patrick Volkerding announced the start of testing for the candidate release of the Slackware 15.0 distribution, marking the freeze of most packages before the release and the developers' focus on fixing release-blocking bugs. A 3.1 GB (x86_64) installation image has been prepared for download, along with a slim version for running in Live mode.
Slackware has been developing since 1993 and is the oldest existing distribution. Its features include a lack of complications and a simple initialization system in the style of classic BSD systems, making Slackware an interesting solution for studying the workings of Unix-like systems, conducting experiments, and getting familiar with Linux.
Slackware 15 has updated software versions, including a switch to Linux kernel 5.13, GCC 11.2 compiler set, and Glibc 2.33 system library. The desktop components have been updated to KDE Plasma 5.22 and KDE Gear 21.08.
