After ten months of development, the release of the Wayfire 0.9 composite server has been presented, utilizing Wayland and enabling the creation of resource-friendly user interfaces with 3D effects similar to 3D plugins for Compiz (screen switching through a 3D cube, spatial window layout, morphing when working with windows, etc.). Wayfire supports extension through plugins and offers a flexible customization system. The project's code is written in C++ and is distributed under the MIT license.
The project is built on the wlroots library, developed by the Sway desktop environment creators, providing basic functions for organizing a composite manager based on Wayland. Management of sessions can use systemd, elogind, or seatd. Launching X11 applications is supported via XWayland. The wf-shell from the Wayfire developers or the third-party panel LavaLauncher can be used as a panel. The project is also developing the wf-config library for working with configuration files and the graphical configurator wcm.
In the new version:
- Support for the 'session-lock' protocol has been added, providing tools for organizing session locking, for example, during the screensaver or when displaying an authentication dialog. The protocol is implemented through the session-lock plugin, which can be activated in the wayfire.ini file and used alongside Swaylock and other screen locking interfaces.
- The ability to use the xkb-bindings plugin has been implemented for assigning keyboard shortcuts that activate regardless of the active keyboard layout.
- In addition to the ability to customize animation duration, support has been provided for changing the method that determines the speed of animated effects (dynamics of animation tempo change), allowing for smoother animations. The methods circle, linear, sigmoid, and easeOutElastic are available to choose from.
- New methods for controlling output, setting configuration parameters, manipulating windows and virtual desktops, and receiving notifications about various events have been implemented in the IPC interface for external control of the composite server. proxy server A new Python package has been added to simplify interaction with Wayfire from scripts.
- In wf-shell and wf-panel, the ability to use CSS to change the styling of desktop and panel elements has been added.
