The release of the free distribution MyBee 13.1.0 has taken place, built on the FreeBSD 13.1 technologies and providing an API for working with virtual machines (via the bhyve hypervisor) and containers (based on FreeBSD jail). The distribution is designed for installation on a dedicated physical server. The size of the installation image is 1.7GB
The basic installation of MyBee provides capabilities for creating, destroying, starting, and stopping virtual environments. By creating their own microservices and registering their endpoints in the API (for example, microservices for snapshots, migration, checkpoints, cloning, renaming, etc. can be easily implemented), users can construct and extend the API for any tasks and create specific solutions.
In addition, the distribution includes a large number of profiles for modern operating systems such as Debian, CentOS, Rocky, Kali, Oracle, Ubuntu, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, DragonflyBSD, and NetBSD, ready for immediate use. Network and access configuration is carried out using cloud-init packages (for Unix-based OS) and cloudbase (for Windows). The project also provides tools for creating custom images. One example of a customized image is a Kubernetes cluster, also launched through the API (Kubernetes support is provided via the K8S-bhyve project).
High deployment speed of virtual machines and operation of the bhyve hypervisor enables the distribution, in single-node installation mode, to find application in application testing tasks as well as in research activities. In the case of uniting several servers MyBee into a cluster, the distribution can serve as a base for building private clouds and FaaS/SaaS platforms. Despite having a simple access control system for the API, the distribution is designed to operate only in trusted environments.
The distribution is developed by participants in the CBSD project and is notable for the absence of any dependencies on code affiliated with foreign companies, as well as the use of a fully alternative technology stack.
