A port of the X.org Synaptics driver has been created, compatible with Wayland-based environments. The port is an implementation of the minimal set of X.Org API required for compiling and running the original driver from X.Org within a background process, as well as an emulator for the IBM ScrollPoint mouse via uinput. This model was chosen because in the libinput code, there are hacks for supporting smooth scrolling that are not available for other devices (the emulated mouse uses a device similar to the IBM TrackPoint instead of a scroll wheel with discrete steps).
Thus, the flow of user input events should appear as follows: kernel -> evdev -> [synaptics -> waynaptics] -> uinput -> kernel -> evdev -> libinput -> Wayland compositor. In the settings of the compositor server for the emulated mouse, pointer acceleration should be disabled since it is already processed on the Synaptics side. The configuration used is a previously saved output from synclient with settings from the X11 session.
The reason for creating the port is mentioned, namely that over 11 years since the first stable release, libinput has not achieved parity with the Synaptics driver in terms of supported features and number of settings, and desktop environments have failed to provide access to even the existing settings.
