The release of the sane-backends package 1.3.1 has been announced, which includes a set of drivers, the command-line utility scanimage, the background process saned for network scanning, and libraries implementing the SANE-API. The project's code is distributed under the GPLv2 license. Release 1.3.0 was skipped due to issues in the build infrastructure.
The package supports 1804 (previously 1747) models of scanners, of which 825 (815) have full support for all features, 825 (780) are rated as good support, 130 (129) are acceptable, and 24 (23) have minimal support. Additionally, there is an untested driver implementation for 499 (464) devices. Support for 478 (470) scanners remains unrealized.

- Dell 1135n (clone of Samsung SCX-4623F).
- Xerox WorkCentre 3335.
- Support for the following scanners has been improved: HP LaserJet M1005, Agfa ARCUS 1200, Xerox WorkCentre 3225, Samsung SCX-4521F.
- Enhancements and fixes have been made to the avision, escl, pixma, hpljm1005, snapscan, xerox_mfp backends:
- In the saned background process and the scanimage utility, the default scanning buffer size has been increased to 1 MB. The option '-B' is proposed for changing buffer size.
- Issues with PDF generation and input processing in scanimage have been resolved.
- The missing SCSI device names have been added to the sane-find-scanner utility.
- Compatibility with Clang 16 has been ensured.
- Build issues on FreeBSD and macOS have been resolved.
