The W3C Consortium has published the third edition of the PNG image format specification, which has achieved recommended standard status. The new version is fully backward compatible with the second edition of the PNG specification released in 2003 and includes additional capabilities such as support for High Dynamic Range (HDR), animated images (APNG), integration of EXIF metadata, and CICP (Coding-Independent Code Points) properties for defining color spaces.
