New releases of the Linux From Scratch 11.2 (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch 11.2 (BLFS) guides have been announced, along with LFS and BLFS editions featuring the system manager systemd. Linux From Scratch provides instructions for building a basic Linux system from scratch using only the source code of the necessary software. Beyond Linux From Scratch complements LFS instructions with information on building and configuring around 1000 software packages, covering various applications from DBMS and server systems to graphical interfaces and media players.
Linux From Scratch 11.2 has transitioned to glibc 2.36, gcc 12.2.0, Linux kernel 5.19.2, binutils 2.39, Coreutils 9.1, Openssl 3.0.5, Perl 5.36.0, Python 3.10.6, SysVinit 3.04, and Systemd 251. Boot script errors have been corrected, and editorial work has been done on the explanatory materials throughout the book.
In Beyond Linux From Scratch 11.2, approximately 1000 programs have been updated, including GNOME 42, KDE Plasma 5.25, KDE Gears 22.08, LibreOffice 7.4, Ffmpeg 5.1, GIMP 2.10.32, Inkscape 1.2.1, Thunderbird 102.2.0, Firefox 102.2.0, SeaMonkey 2.53.13, IceWM 2.9.9, Mesa 22.1.7, GTK 4.6.7, MariaDB 10.6.9, PostgreSQL 14.5, Postfix 3.7.2, BIND 9.18.6, and more.
In addition to LFS and BLFS, several additional books have been released within the project:
- âAutomated Linux From Scratchâ â a framework for automating the building of LFS systems and managing packages;
- âCross Linux From Scratchâ â a description of cross-platform building of LFS systems, supporting architectures: x86, x86_64, sparc, mips, PowerPC, alpha, hppa, arm;
- âHardened Linux From Scratchâ â instructions for increasing the security of LFS, applying additional patches and restrictions;
- âLFS Hintsâ â a collection of additional tips with descriptions of alternative solutions for the steps described in LFS and BLFS.
