New releases of the Linux From Scratch 12.2 (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch 12.2 (BLFS) guides are available in two versions, featuring SysVinit and systemd initialization systems. Linux From Scratch provides instructions for building a basic Linux system from scratch using only the source code of the necessary software. Beyond Linux From Scratch expands on the LFS instructions, offering information about building and configuring over 1000 software packages for various applications, from database management systems and virtualization systems to an extensive set of tools for developers and graphical shells.
In Linux From Scratch 12.2, 45 packages have been updated, and a new package, lz4, has been added. Updates include Glibc 2.40, Linux kernel 6.10.5, binutils-2.43.1, gcc-14.2.0, systemd-256.4, SysVinit-3.10, and others.
At the same time, translations of the Linux From Scratch 12.2-SysV and Linux From Scratch 12.2-systemd guides into Russian have been published. Due to periodic issues when downloading some packages, the source files for the required packages have been placed in the repository (wget-list and md5sums are provided).
Beyond LFS includes over 1750 updates, featuring numerous textual changes for improved readability. Among the major changes is the upgrade of KDE5 (Frameworks, Gear, Plasma) to KDE6. GNOME has been upgraded to version 46, KDE Plasma to 6.1.4, and LXQt to version 2.0.0. Several new packages have been added — FreeRDP, vinagre has been replaced with gnome-connections, and dolphin and konversation from KDE have been included. A total of 32 packages have been added to support existing packages in the book. Additionally, 21 unsupported packages have been removed, including Python2 and GTK2. It has been announced that Qt5 will be removed in future BLFS versions.
