Linux From Scratch 12.4 and Beyond Linux From Scratch 12.4 have been released.

New releases of the Linux From Scratch 12.4 (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch 12.4 (BLFS) guides have been presented, as well as LFS and BLFS editions with the system manager systemd. Linux From Scratch includes instructions for building a basic Linux system from scratch, using only the source texts of the necessary software. Beyond Linux From Scratch complements the LFS instructions with information on building and configuring around 1000 software packages covering various areas from DBMS and server systems to graphical interfaces and media players.

In Linux From Scratch 12.4, 49 packages have been updated, including the Linux kernel 6.16.1, Systemd 257.8, Binutils 2.45, gcc 15.2, glibc 2.42, Bash 5.3, Coreutils 9.7, Meson 1.8.3, OpenSSL 3.5.2, Perl 5.42.0, Python 3.13.7, and Vim 9.1.1629. Errors in the boot scripts have been fixed, and editorial work has been done in the explanatory materials throughout the book.

Beyond Linux From Scratch 12.4 features over 1300 updates, including KDE Plasma 6.4.4, KDE Gears 25.08, GNOME 48, Xfce 4.20.2, LXQt 2.2.1, IceWM 3.8.2, LibreOffice 25.8.1, FFmpeg 7.1.1, Inkscape 1.4.2, Thunderbird 140.2, Firefox 140.2.0, SeaMonkey 2.53.21, GIMP 3.0.4, Mesa 25.1.8, GTK 4.18.6, MariaDB 11.8.3, PostgreSQL 17.6, SQLite 3.50.4, Postfix 3.10.4, Exim 4.98.2, BIND 9.20.12, and Apache httpd 2.4.65. New packages added include roman-numerals-py, Clone::PP, and fast_float. Packages libgdata, uhttpmock, and AbiWord have been removed.

The guide ‘Gaming Linux From Scratch 12.4’ has also been updated with instructions for installing computer games and related programs, such as Steam and Wine, in LFS 12.4. The guide covers over 100 packages. The new version reinstates support for libglvnd and NVIDIA, ends support for 32-bit CPUs, and adds support for OBS, Hyprland, SQLite, Speex, and NVIDIA EGL libraries.

In addition to LFS and BLFS, several additional books have been released within the project:

• ‘Automated Linux From Scratch’ — a framework for automating the building of LFS systems and managing packages;
• ‘Cross Linux From Scratch’ — a description of cross-platform building of LFS systems, supporting architectures: x86, x86_64, sparc, mips, PowerPC, alpha, hppa, arm;
• ‘Hardened Linux From Scratch’ — instructions for increasing the security of LFS, applying additional patches and restrictions;
• ‘LFS Hints’ — a collection of additional tips with descriptions of alternative solutions for the steps described in LFS and BLFS.
• Multilib-LFS is a guide for installing Multilib to run 32-bit programs in 64-bit environments.
