Wine 8.21, Wine staging 8.21 and VKD3D-Proton 2.11 have been released.

An experimental release of the open implementation of WinAPI — Wine 8.21 has occurred. Since the release of version 8.20, 29 bug reports have been closed and 321 changes have been made.

The most significant changes:

  • The development of functionality aimed at enabling the use of Wine in environments based on the Wayland protocol without XWayland and X11 components continues. The winewayland.drv driver now supports the Vulkan graphics API and allows scaling output on high pixel density (High-DPI) screens. A problem with the cursor disappearing in GNOME on systems with dual monitors has been resolved.
  • Initial support for the ARM64EC ABI proposed by Microsoft in Windows 11 has been added.
  • The locale database has been updated.
  • The sound output issue on FreeBSD when using the OSS sound subsystem has been resolved.
  • Bug reports related to the operation of the following applications have been closed: PhotoScape, RootMagic 6, PreSonus Studio One 2.6, WechatOCR, 3DMark 2000, Office 2021, ModOrganizer 2.5.0, Quicken, WinSCP.
  • Bug reports related to the following games have been closed: The Elder Scrolls: Drome Racers, Ninki Seiyuu no Tsukukurikata, Godhood, Age of Empires II Definitive Edition, Death Stranding, Port Royale 2, DragonAge Origins.

At the same time, the release of the Wine Staging 8.21 project has been formed, providing extended builds of Wine that include incomplete or risky patches that are not yet suitable for acceptance into the main branch of Wine. Compared to Wine, Wine Staging offers 491 additional patches. In this new Wine Staging release, synchronization with the Wine 8.21 codebase has been executed and the vkd3d-latest patch has been updated.

Additionally, it is worth noting the publication by Valve of the VKD3D-Proton 2.11 project, developing a branch from the vkd3d codebase aimed at improving Direct3D 12 support in the Proton game launch package. VKD3D-Proton supports Proton-specific changes, optimizations, and enhancements for improved operation of Windows games based on Direct3D 12 that have not yet been accepted into the main vkd3d repository. Among the differences, there is also a focus on utilizing modern Vulkan extensions and the capabilities of fresh graphics driver releases to achieve full compatibility with Direct3D 12.

Among the changes in VKD3D-Proton 2.11:

  • By default, support for the DXR API (DirectX Raytracing) has been enabled.
  • An emulation of the Sampler Feedback mechanism needed for implementing DirectX FL 12.2 (Feature Level 12_2) has been added.
  • Support for DirectX Ultimate (FL 12.2) is enabled by default for systems with RDNA2+ and Turing+ GPUs.
  • The following features have been implemented: IndependentFrontAndBackStencilRefMaskSupported, TriangleFanSupported, DynamicIndexBufferStripCutSupported, DynamicDepthBiasSupported, NonNormalizedCoordinateSamplersSupported, MismatchingOutputDimensionsSupported, PointSamplingAddressesNeverRoundUp, RasterizerDesc2Supported, NarrowQuadrilateralLinesSupported, AnisoFilterWithPointMipSupported.
  • Optimizations in command grouping and batch processing have been performed for the NV_device_generated_commands and NV_device_generated_commands_compute extensions, resulting in a 15% increase in FPS in Halo Infinite on systems with the RADV driver and a 1-2% boost in performance for Starfield.
  • Memory allocation optimization for DGC buffers has been carried out, significantly reducing CPU load when using the NVIDIA driver.
  • Support for the Vulkan extension VK_EXT_image_compression_control and the NVIDIA extension NV_device_generated_commands_compute has been added.
  • Compatibility has been improved for the games Resident Evil 4 — Separate Ways, Lords of the Fallen, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Windjammers 2, and Jurassic World Evolution 2.
