An experimental release of the open implementation of the Win32 API — Wine 9.4 has taken place. Since the release of 9.3, 25 bug reports have been closed, and 321 changes have been made.
The most significant changes:
- The development of the winewayland.drv driver has continued, allowing the use of Wine in environments based on the Wayland protocol without the use of XWayland and X11 components. The new version adds initial support for OpenGL. Basic GL functions have been added: wglGetExtensionsString{ARB,EXT}, wglGetProcAddress, wglDescribePixelFormat, wglSetPixelFormat(WINE), wglMakeCurrent, wglMakeContextCurrentARB, and wglSwapBuffers. Support for creating an OpenGL context and resizing OpenGL content has been introduced.
- The built-in Vkd3d package implementing Direct3D 12 has been updated to version 1.11.
- Support for process privilege elevation has been added — when creating server processes (msi action server) and processes invoking RtlCreateUserProcess() and CreateProcessInternal(), a limited administrator token is now used by default.
- Improvements related to pointer input devices (touchpads, mice) using the HID (Human Interface Device) protocol have been made. Support has been added for receiving and sending WM_POINTER* messages (WM_POINTERENTER, WM_POINTERLEAVE, etc.).
- Explorer now includes optional support for a start menu and a toolbar. It ensures the launch of explorer.exe with reduced access rights.
- Support for processing XInput2 events bound to individual windows has been added in winex11.
- Improvements have been made to MIDI format data handling in dmime.
- The functions IAudioClient3_InitializeSharedAudioStream and IAudioClient3_GetSharedModeEnginePeriod have been implemented.
- Support for Vulkan specification 1.3.279 has been added to winevulkan. The VK_EXT_map_memory_placed Vulkan extension has been used for memory mapping.
- Bug reports related to the operation of games such as Minecraft Education Edition and battle.net have been closed.
- Bug reports related to the operation of applications including Explorer++ 1.2, Total Commander 8.x, Visio 2003, Skype 4, Toad for MySQL Freeware 7.x, Microsoft Toolkit from MS Office 2013, Luminance HDR, AI Shared Editor 6.1.0, Desktop Window Manager, Free Download Manager, and FoxVox have been closed.
At the same time, the Wine Staging 9.4 project release has been formed, providing enhanced Wine builds that include partially ready or risky patches that are not yet suitable for acceptance into the main Wine branch. Compared to Wine, Wine Staging offers 462 additional patches. In the new Wine Staging release:
- Synchronization with the Wine 9.4 codebase has been achieved.
- Patches have been updated: vkd3d-latest, kernel32-CopyFileEx, ntdll-Junction_Points, ntdll-WRITECOPY, and user32-rawinput-mouse.
- Patches: File_Permissions and mscoree-CorValidateImage have been removed as they are no longer required in Wine.
- The main release of Wine 18 has been updated with the implementation of NewMenu and features for clipboard operations from the context menu in shell32, the flag for deletion without confirmation in ISFHelper::DeleteItems, a context menu handler for creating new folders, launching initial processes via start.exe, running explorer.exe with restricted access rights, launching processes with a different trust level (trustlevel), and more.
Additionally, the release of the GE-Proton 9-1 project has taken place, which involves enthusiasts creating Valve-independent extended builds of the Proton package for running Windows applications, featuring a more recent version of Wine, the incorporation of FFmpeg in FAudio, and the inclusion of additional patches that address issues in various gaming applications.
In Proton GE 9-1, changes from the latest codebases of wine 9, proton 9, dxvk, and vkd3d have been incorporated. Fixes have been added to resolve issues in the following games:
