Oracle has introduced Solaris 11.4.90 CBE (Common Build Environment), a variant of the Solaris 11.4 operating system aimed at open source developers and personal use. CBE simplifies access to the latest versions of software and updates for those who wish to use Solaris for free. This is the third release in the CBE series — the first was published in 2022. Unlike the main builds of Solaris 11.4, for which the license allows free use for testing, development, and personal projects, the CBE edition features a continuous release model for new versions and is similar to the Solaris 11.4 SRU (Support Repository Update) edition.
The build includes new versions of software, expanded functionality, and bug fixes available at the time of the release. A separate ISO image prepared for download is available, and there is the possibility to switch to using CBE after installing the regular Oracle Solaris 11.4 builds. To switch to CBE, simply connect to the repository pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release in the IPS package manager and execute the command 'pkg update'. The source code for the open components of Solaris is available in the repository on GitHub, and individual packages can be downloaded from pkg.oracle.com. Support for the Oracle Solaris platform will be provided until 2037.
