The non-profit advocacy organization Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has announced its decision to phase out the HTTPS Everywhere browser extension. The HTTPS Everywhere extension was available for all popular browsers and allowed users to access all websites using HTTPS where possible, addressing the issue of websites that by default offered unencrypted access but supported HTTPS, as well as resources that linked from secure areas to unencrypted pages.
At the end of this year, the development of the extension will cease, but to smooth the transition away from HTTPS Everywhere, the project will be maintained in 2022, allowing for updates in case serious issues are discovered. The reason for phasing out HTTPS Everywhere is the emergence of built-in options in browsers for automatic redirection to HTTPS when a site is accessed via HTTP. Notably, starting with Firefox 76, Chrome 94, Edge 92, and Safari 15, browsers support HTTPS Only mode.
