The nonprofit organization Rust Foundation, focused on the development and support of the Rust programming language and its ecosystem, has announced the Rust Innovation Lab initiative aimed at providing support for open-source projects written in Rust that ensure the operation of critical infrastructure elements. This initiative will allow projects to receive financial, legal, and marketing support, as well as administrative assistance and project management organization.
The Rust Innovation Lab will provide Rust projects with the necessary resources to develop their ideas without being distracted by unrelated tasks, while maintaining their independence. Among other things, the initiative will facilitate the collection of donations and interactions with sponsors on behalf of the Rust Foundation nonprofit organization to provide tax benefits. Thus, projects will not need to create their own legal entities, open bank accounts, or manage tax reporting. The Rust Foundation will handle accounting and provide the necessary reports for sponsors and project participants.
The first project accepted into the Rust Innovation Lab is the Rustls cryptographic library, which offers client and server implementations of TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 protocols for Rust projects. Rustls does not provide its own implementation of cryptographic primitives but instead uses pluggable cryptographic function providers (supporting ECDSA, Ed25519, RSA, ChaCha20-Poly1305, AES128-GCM, and AES256-GCM algorithms). By default, Rustls uses a cryptographic provider based on the aws-lc-rs library, which is developed by Amazon and derives from the C++ code of AWS-LC, forked from the BoringSSL project (a Google-maintained fork of OpenSSL). Alternatively, the ring library, partially based on BoringSSL and combining code in assembly, C++, and Rust, can also be used as a cryptographic provider.
