As part of the GNOME-X11 project, development has begun on the GNOME 50 fork, which reintroduces the ability to run under the X server. The project is being developed by an independent enthusiast, not affiliated with the GNOME community. Currently, the project's repository has published branches of the components gnome-settings-daemon, mutter, gdm, gnome-control-center, gnome-shell, gnome-session, and libshew, in which commits removing X11 support have been reverted.
