The Russian company RED SOFT, known for developing the RHEL-based distribution RED OS and the database system Red Database (an edition of the open-source database Firebird), has registered the operating system RED OS M in the registry of Russian software. This OS is aimed at use on mobile devices and desktop systems with touch screens. RED OS M is built from the source code of the Android platform hosted in the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) repository and is free from ties to Google services and products.
The proposed platform is notable for its support of hybrid mode operation, enabling a full desktop experience when using a touchscreen tablet or connecting a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to a smartphone. In desktop mode, it supports running not only mobile applications available for the Android platform but also full-fledged graphical programs like Firefox, Chromium, LibreOffice, Thunderbird, and Krita. The launch of desktop Linux applications is facilitated by an embedded environment with the RED OS distribution (a fork from RHEL 7). The installation of RPM packages is supported. The graphical interface of the desktop mode is based on the Mate desktop environment, which continues the development of the GNOME 2.32 code base.
In the mobile environment, a custom edition of the user interface (Android Launcher) is used, and for installing Android applications in APK format, the RuStore application catalog is offered by default. However, there is also the possibility of installing components of GMS (Google Mobile Services) and HMS (HUAWEI Mobile Services) to access the Google Play and HUAWEI AppGallery catalogs. OTA system updates are supported. Some of the applications include a camera application, photo gallery, video player, email client, voice recorder, calendar, address book, file manager, document processing programs, browsers Chromium and Yandex Browser, as well as applications for accessing Russian services.
