In accordance with a previously given promise, Streetwriters has transitioned its note-taking platform, Notesnook, to the category of open projects. Notesnook is presented as a fully open alternative to the Evernote system, focused on ensuring privacy and supporting end-to-end encryption to eliminate data analysis on the server. The code is written in JavaScript/Typescript and is open under the GPLv3 license.
Currently, the code for the web interface, desktop applications, mobile applications, common libraries, note editor, and extensions has been published. The code server for synchronizing notes between different devices is promised to be released in a separate repository by the end of September. The web interface is built using the React framework, while the mobile applications use React Native.
For end-to-end encryption of notes and attached files or images on the client-side, the XChaCha20-Poly1305 and Argon2 algorithms are used, while server for synchronization, all data is transmitted in an encrypted form using the user's key. Once the server is launched, the entire infrastructure for note management across different devices will be able to run on user-controlled hardware.
Login to the application can be protected by a password to prevent unauthorized access to notes if the device falls into the wrong hands. There is an option to create shared notes, including those encrypted with a separate password, as well as specially secured notes for storing sensitive information, such as passwords and access keys.
In notes, you can include tables, task lists, code blocks, embed multimedia data and arbitrary files, and use Markdown formatting. For more convenient information structuring, tags can be attached to notes, color labels can be assigned, projects can be grouped, and parts of content within a note can be collapsed by headers. Important notes can be pinned, notifications can be attached, and reminders can be created.
