Ahead of the release of Intel's Comet Lake-S processors, ASUS gathered some successful extreme overclocking enthusiasts at its headquarters, allowing them to experiment with the new Intel processors. As a result, even at the time of release, they set a very high benchmark for the maximum frequency of the flagship Core i9-10900K.
Enthusiasts began their introduction to the new platform with 'simple' liquid nitrogen cooling. While they couldn't immediately achieve stable system operation, through trial and error, the experimenters managed to achieve some significant successes. The results of these overclocking experiments are not specified; however, HWBot records note that the Intel Core i9-10900K reached a frequency of 7400 MHz using liquid nitrogen. This record was established by Belgian enthusiast Massman, who was part of the team assembled by ASUS.
After experimenting with liquid nitrogen, overclockers switched to using a colder substance—liquid helium. Its boiling point approaches absolute zero at -269 °C, while nitrogen boils at 'only' -195.8 °C. Unsurprisingly, liquid helium allows for much lower temperatures for the cooled chips, but its use is complicated by high costs and rapid evaporation. This is why the enthusiasts had to ensure a continuous supply of helium to the copper cup on the processor.
As a result, Swedish enthusiast known as elmor managed to achieve a remarkable frequency of 7707.62 MHz on the Core i9-10900K, with the chip maintaining the activity of all ten cores and Hyper-Threading technology. It’s worth noting that this is a very high benchmark, especially considering that the overclocking record for the previous Core i9-9900K currently stands at 7612.19 MHz, while the Core i9-9900KS has a record of only 7478.02 MHz.
ASUS provided experimenters with its own motherboards, specifically designed for extreme overclocking—the new ASUS ROG Maximus XII Apex on the Intel Z490 chipset. Additionally, the test system used only one G.Skill Trident Z RGB memory module.
