Maxim Dunin, one of the three active key developers of Nginx, has announced the creation of a new fork — FreeNginx. Unlike the Angie project, which also created a branch from Nginx, the new fork will be developed solely as a non-commercial project, evolving within the community. FreeNginx positions itself as the main descendant of Nginx — "considering the details — rather, the fork stayed with F5." The goal of FreeNginx is announced […]
Researchers from Aqua Security have noted the potential for an attack on users of the Ubuntu distribution, exploiting the features of the "command-not-found" handler, which provides suggestions when attempting to launch a non-existent program in the system. The issue is that when evaluating the commands being executed that are not present in the system, "command-not-found" uses not only packages from standard repositories but also snap packages […]
The release of the main branch nginx 1.25.4 has been formed, continuing the development of new features. The parallelly supported stable branch 1.24.x only includes changes related to fixing serious bugs and vulnerabilities. In the future, a stable branch 1.26 will be formed based on the main branch 1.25.x. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the BSD license. In this new version […]
The release of the desktop-oriented distribution GhostBSD 24.01.1 has been published, built on FreeBSD 14-STABLE and offering the MATE desktop environment. Additionally, the community is creating unofficial builds with Xfce. By default, GhostBSD uses the ZFS file system. Both live mode operation and installation on a hard drive are supported (using the custom installer ginstall, written in Python). Boot images have been generated for the architecture […]
Two vulnerabilities have been identified in various implementations of the DNSSEC protocol affecting DNS resolvers BIND, PowerDNS, dnsmasq, Knot Resolver, and Unbound. These vulnerabilities allow denial of service attacks against DNS resolvers performing validation using DNSSEC due to increased CPU load, which hampers the processing of other requests. To carry out the attack, it is sufficient to send a request to a DNS resolver using DNSSEC that leads to a specially crafted […]
Developers of the Chromium project have reported plans to implement support for Web Monetization technology in the browser, allowing automatic micropayments to website owners for viewing their content. It is expected that this technology could be used to monetize websites instead of displaying ads, serving as an equivalent to online tips or providing selective paid access to content without requiring a subscription. The first prototype of Web Monetization implementation […]
The release of OpenVPN 2.6.7 has been prepared, a package for creating virtual private networks that allows for encrypted connections between two client machines or facilitates the operation of a centralized VPN server for simultaneous connection of multiple clients. This new version is notable for its recertification. The project's code has been transitioned from using a pure GPLv2 license to a combined license, which extends the GPLv2 text with an exception that allows linking to code under […]
Following the discontinuation of perpetual license sales, Broadcom, which acquired VMware's business last November, has stopped distributing free versions of VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 7.x and 8.x). The free versions were limited in the number of processor cores and memory size and did not include advanced features. Nevertheless, the basic functionality was present, making them sought after […]
The release of Regolith Desktop 3.1 has been introduced, developed by the creators of the same-named Linux distribution. Regolith is based on GNOME session management technologies, the i3 window manager, Picom and Sway compositing servers, the i3bar panel, the rofication notification system, the i3status-rs status bar, and the ilia application launcher interface. The project's developments are distributed under the GPLv3 license. Installation packages are prepared for Ubuntu and Debian. […]
The FreeBSD developers have announced their plan to discontinue support for 32-bit platforms. The FreeBSD 15 branch will not include support for armv6, i386, and powerpc platforms, while support for the armv7 platform will be discontinued in the FreeBSD 16 branch. The ability to build 32-bit programs and use the COMPAT_FREEBSD32 mode to run 32-bit executables in a 64-bit kernel environment will remain available at least until the end of the […]
The ZLUDA project has prepared an open implementation of CUDA technology for AMD GPUs, allowing unmodified CUDA applications to run with performance close to that of applications run without layers. The released toolkit provides binary compatibility with existing CUDA applications compiled using the CUDA compiler for NVIDIA GPUs. The implementation works on top of AMD's developing ROCm stack and the HIP (Heterogeneous-computing Interface for Portability) runtime. Code […]
