Firefox 121 is now available. What's new: Wayland support has been enabled. The Wayland compositor will be used by default instead of XWayland (no longer requiring the browser to be launched with the MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND parameter). This has allowed for gesture support on touchpads and touch screens, swipe navigation, support for different DPI settings when multiple monitors are present in the system, and improved graphics performance. Due to limitations of the Wayland protocol […]
Timothee Ravier from Red Hat, maintainer of the Fedora Silverblue and Fedora Kinoite projects, has proposed a way to avoid using the sudo utility, which utilizes the suid bit for privilege escalation. Instead of sudo for executing commands as root by a regular user, it is suggested to use the ssh utility with a local connection to the same system via a UNIX socket and permission verification based on […]
Microsoft Copilot, the artificial intelligence assistant, can now compose songs thanks to integration with the music application Suno. Users can input requests into Copilot like "Create a pop song about family adventures," and Suno will bring their musical ideas to life via a plugin. From a single sentence, Suno can create a complete song — with lyrics, instrumental parts, and vocals […]
The release of the PoCL 5.0 (Portable Computing Language OpenCL) project has been announced, which develops an implementation of the OpenCL standard independent of graphics accelerator manufacturers and allows using various backends for executing OpenCL kernels on different types of graphical and central processors. The project's code is distributed under the MIT license. It supports operation on X86_64, MIPS32, ARM v7, AMD HSA APU, NVIDIA GPU, and various specialized […]
The Fedora Asahi Remix 39 distribution has been introduced, designed for installation on Mac computers equipped with ARM chips developed by Apple. Fedora Asahi Remix 39 is based on the package base of Fedora Linux 39 and features the Calamares installer. This is the first release published after the Asahi project transitioned from Arch to Fedora. The development of Fedora Asahi Remix is handled by the Fedora Asahi SIG group, and the transition […]
The release of the web browser Firefox 121 has taken place, and a long-term support branch update — 115.6.0 — has been formed. The Firefox 122 branch has entered the beta testing stage, with the release scheduled for January 23. Key features in Firefox 121 include the default use of the Wayland compositor server in Linux instead of XWayland, which has resolved issues with touchpad operation and gesture support on touchscreens […]
The Zulip 8 release has been introduced, a server platform for deploying corporate messengers suitable for facilitating communication among employees and development teams. The project was originally developed by Zulip and was open-sourced after its acquisition by Dropbox under the Apache 2.0 license. The server code is written in Python using the Django framework. The client software is available for Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, and […]
After nearly two years of development, the release of the Qubes 4.2.0 operating system has been presented, implementing the idea of using a hypervisor for strict isolation of applications and OS components (each class of applications and system services operates in separate virtual machines). A system with 16 GB of RAM (minimum 6 GB) and a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU with VT-x technology support is recommended for operation […]
The most frustrating thing for novice AI artists is the inability of generative models to extract a visual image from latent space that precisely matches both their textual descriptions and aesthetic expectations. Fortunately, there are ways to mitigate this annoying uncertainty.
The release of OpenSSH 9.6 has been published, an open-source implementation of a client and server for working with SSH 2.0 and SFTP protocols. The new version addresses three security issues: a vulnerability in the SSH protocol (CVE-2023-48795, the 'Terrapin' attack) that allows a MitM attack to downgrade the connection to use less secure authentication algorithms and disable protection against attacks through side channels that recreate input via […]
A group of researchers from Ruhr University Bochum (Germany) has introduced a new technique for a MitM attack on SSH — Terrapin, which exploits a vulnerability (CVE-2023-48795) in the protocol. An attacker capable of conducting a MitM attack can block the transmission of a message setting protocol extensions during the connection negotiation phase to reduce the security level of the connection. A prototype toolkit for performing the attack has been published on GitHub. In the context of OpenSSH, the vulnerability […]
Changes have been added to the net-next branch, which develops changes for the Linux kernel 6.8, incorporating an initial Rust wrapper over the phylib abstraction layer and using this wrapper for the ax88796b_rust driver, which provides support for the PHY interface of the Asix AX88772A Ethernet controller (100MBit). The driver consists of 135 lines of code and is positioned as a simple working example for creating network drivers in Rust, ready […]
