The developers of the OpenVPN VPN package have introduced the ovpn-dco kernel module, which significantly boosts VPN performance. Although the module is still in development, focusing only on the linux-next branch and has an experimental status, it has already reached a level of stability that allows it to be used for enabling the OpenVPN Cloud service. Compared to the configuration based on the interface […]
Canonical has announced an extension of the update formation period for the LTS releases of Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 from 8 to 10 years. A similar decision to extend the support period was previously made for Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04. Google has released the source code for the HIBA (Host Identity Based Authorization) project, which offers an implementation of an additional authorization mechanism for managing SSH user access tied to hosts (checks whether access to a specific resource is allowed or not during authentication using public keys). Integration with OpenSSH is ensured by specifying the HIBA handler in the AuthorizedPrincipalsCommand directive in \/etc\/ssh\/sshd_config. The project's code is written […]
A vulnerability (CVE-2021-33035) has been identified in the Apache OpenOffice office suite, allowing for code execution when opening a specially crafted DBF file. The researcher who discovered the issue advised about the creation of a working exploit for the Windows platform. A fix for the vulnerability is currently available only in the form of a patch in the project's repository, which has been included in the test builds of OpenOffice 4.1.11. Updates for the stable branch are still […]
The release of Samba 4.15.0 has been announced, continuing the development of the Samba 4 branch with a complete implementation of the domain controller and Active Directory service, compatible with the Windows 2000 implementation and capable of servicing all supported Microsoft versions of Windows clients, including Windows 10. Samba 4 is a multifunctional server product that also provides a file server, print service, and identification server (winbind). Key changes […]
The release of the DXVK 1.9.2 layer is available, providing an implementation of DXGI (DirectX Graphics Infrastructure), Direct3D 9, 10, and 11, which operates through call translation in the Vulkan API. To use DXVK, drivers supporting Vulkan API 1.1 are required, such as Mesa RADV 20.2, NVIDIA 415.22, Intel ANV 19.0 and AMDVLK. DXVK can be used to run 3D applications and games in […]
The Headscale project is developing an open implementation of the server component of the Tailscale VPN network, allowing the creation of Tailscale-like VPN networks on its own infrastructure without being tied to third-party services. The Headscale code is written in Go and is distributed under the BSD license. The project is managed by Juan Font Alonso from the European Space Agency. Tailscale enables the connection of any number of geographically dispersed hosts into one […]
After 10 years of development, the first stable release of the Bespoke Synth project is available, which develops a modular software sound synthesizer that allows generating and processing sound based on the visual redirecting of audio streams between different modules that shape and alter the sound wave, as well as apply effects. The project's code is written in C++ and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. Ready builds are prepared for […]
The release of the Kali Linux 2021.3 distribution has been unveiled, intended for testing systems for vulnerabilities, conducting audits, analyzing residual information, and identifying the consequences of malicious attacks. All original developments created within the framework of this distribution are distributed under the GPL license and are available through a public Git repository. Several variants of ISO images, sized 380 MB, 3.8 GB, and 4.6 GB, are prepared for download. […]
It has been 30 years since the first public release of the Linux kernel. Kernel 0.01 was 62 KB in size when compressed, included 88 files, and contained 10,239 lines of source code. According to Linus Torvalds, the moment of publishing kernel 0.01 marks the true anniversary of the project. It included 88 files and 10,239 lines of code. Linus wrote in the mailing list […]
A vulnerability (CVE-2021-41073) has been discovered in the Linux kernel, allowing a local user to elevate their privileges in the system. The issue stems from an error in the implementation of the asynchronous input/output io_uring interface, leading to a call to a memory block that has already been freed. It is noted that the researcher was able to achieve memory release at a specified offset while manipulating the loop_rw_iter() function as an unprivileged user, making it possible to create a working […]
A preview release of the Windowsfx 11 distribution is now available, aimed at recreating the Windows 11 interface and specific Windows visual effects. The environment has been recreated using a specialized WxDesktop theme and additional applications. The build is based on Ubuntu 20.04 and KDE Plasma 5.22.5 desktop. An ISO image sized 4.3 GB is prepared for download. The project is also developing a paid version that includes […]
