The release of the Nextcloud Hub 26 Winter platform has been announced, providing a self-sufficient solution for organizing collaboration among enterprise employees and teams developing various projects. At the same time, the cloud platform underlying Nextcloud Hub, Nextcloud 33, has been published, enabling the deployment of cloud storage with support for synchronization and data sharing, allowing viewing and editing of data from any device at any point in the network […]
Ladybird is transitioning to partial use of Rust instead of C++. Developers have long sought a memory-safe alternative: Swift was unsuitable due to its weak interaction capabilities with C++ and limited support outside of Apple. Rust proved to be better: a mature ecosystem, many contributors already know the language, and it is already used in Firefox and Chromium. The first to be ported was LibJS — the JavaScript engine (lexer, parser, AST, bytecode generator). […]
The release of the mathematical computing system GNU Octave 11.1.0 has taken place (the first release of the 11.x series, branch 11.0 was used for development), providing an interpretable language largely compatible with Matlab. GNU Octave can be used to solve linear problems, nonlinear and differential equations, perform computations with complex numbers and matrices, visualize data, and conduct mathematical experiments. The code is written in […]
Andreas Kling, the founder of the web browser Ladybird, announced the decision to involve the Rust language in the project development and the start of rewriting parts of Ladybird in this language. As an experiment with C++, the JavaScript engine LibJS has already been rewritten in Rust. LibJS was chosen due to its good test coverage, which simplifies the assessment of the porting quality. To speed up the porting process, AI assistants Claude Code and OpenAI were involved […]
The debate over whether a neural network or the human brain consumes more energy has taken an unexpected turn. Sam Altman stated that a correct comparison should take into account not only the brain's work but also millennia of evolution and all the calories consumed by a person up to the point of achieving intellectual maturity. The head of OpenAI spoke at an event organized by The Indian Express with […]
The lead developer of the io_uring project and the fio utility for flexible I/O subsystem testing, Jens Axboe, sought help from the Claude neural network of Anthropic. The neural network helped Axboe understand the failures when working with QEMU – a utility for running virtual machines. Axboe noted that it slows down when working with AHCI and SCSI disks. The neural network assisted […]
On February 15, after three months of development, the release of the 2026.02 distribution of KaOS was announced – an independent Linux distribution built from scratch and focused on using Wayland, Qt, and KDE technologies. KaOS utilizes a "rolling" package update system (with over 2000 packages) and uses pacman from the Arch Linux project for package management. Prior to this version, the desktop environment in KaOS […]
The developers of the T2 Linux project, which is developing a package manager and a platform for creating Linux distributions, announced the restoration of support for the 2D acceleration architecture XAA (XFree86 Acceleration Architecture) in X.Org Server. This architecture, developed in 1996, was designed to enable hardware acceleration of 2D graphics operations in the X server. Support for XAA was removed from the X server back in 2012 after the majority of the relevant DDX drivers were migrated to […]
Oracle has released the Solaris 11.4 SRU 90 (Support Repository Update), which offers a series of significant changes and improvements for the Solaris 11.4 branch. To install the proposed updates, it is sufficient to execute the command ‘pkg update’. Users can also take advantage of the free edition of Solaris 11.4 CBE (Common Build Environment), being developed using a continuous publishing model of new […]
After two years of development, the release of the Lakka 6.1 distribution has been introduced (release 6.0 was skipped), which allows you to transform PCs, set-top boxes, or single-board computers into a full-fledged gaming console for running retro games. The project is a modification of the LibreELEC distribution, originally designed for creating home theater systems. Lakka builds are available for i386, x86_64 (Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD GPUs), Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi, Banana […]
After nearly two years of development, the release of the visual editor for scientific documents, LyX 2.5.0, has been announced. This software allows users to create texts using TeX/LaTeX markup while visually editing the document layout in a WYSIWYM representation. The final document is saved in LaTeX format, but text can also be imported and exported in formats such as PDF, Postscript, DVI, ASCII, HTML, OpenDocument, RTF, ODF, DOC, and ePub. The code […]
