Google has begun beta testing the open mobile platform Android 15. The release of Android 15 is expected in the third quarter of 2024. A preview testing program has been proposed to assess the new capabilities of the platform. Firmware builds have been prepared for Pixel 6/6a/6 Pro, Pixel 7/7a/7 Pro, Pixel 8/8a/8 Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet.
Changes in Android 15 Beta 1 compared to the second preview version:
- The operating system now includes the ability to archive rarely used applications to free up space on the storage. If needed, an application can be retrieved from the archive. Apps with REQUEST_DELETE_PACKAGES permissions can now call the requestArchive method to request the archiving of an installed package, which will result in the removal of the APK package and all cache files, while keeping the shortcut and any associated user data. When attempting to launch an archived application, it will be reloaded and restored.
- By default, apps are displayed in full-screen mode, allowing information to cover the entire visible area of the screen without being constrained by the upper status bar and lower navigation bar (these bars appear translucent and overlay the app's content). To display content behind system panels, it is no longer necessary to explicitly call the Window.setDecorFitsSystemWindows(false) and EnableEdgeToEdge() functions.
- Efforts to simplify the use of NFC-enabled phones for one-tap payment (tap to pay) have continued. Apps can now register a fingerprint on supported devices to receive notifications about NFC-related activity when multiple NFC-enabled apps are concurrently in use on the device.
- A ProfilingManager class has been added, allowing applications to request profiling data. For example, access to heap memory dumps, heap usage information, and stack activity can be obtained.
- The E2eeContactKeysManager API has been added for managing end-to-end encryption (E2EE) keys in applications. Integrating E2eeContactKeysManager into the address book provides users with a centralized interface for managing public recipient keys, as well as verifying these keys.
- An additional layer of protection against malicious activity from background applications has been added, aimed at activating other applications, elevating their privileges, and abusing user interaction.
